History and presentation of activity
Textiles are one of the most rich and most beautiful art branches of Lithuanian folk. Our extant treasury of folk textiles shows their big artistry, deep traditions and distinctive nature. Household culture of Lithuanian folk talks about monumental importance of textiles in folk life from the oldest times. Archaeological dig performed in Lithuanian territory show that from the II century there were laid tools of spinning and weave into tombs alongside various metal decorations and guns, also there were laid flaxy and woollen textiles. From the XVI century feudalists exported Lithuanian linen and yarn of bondmen into West Europe (Germany and Holland).
The first workshops, similar to weaving workshops were established in the Great Duchy of Lithuania in the beginning of XVII century.
We would like to familiarize inhabitants of Vilnius and visitors of the city with weave process, Lithuanian traditions of home weave of flax , represent national culture. Visitors will be met warmly in our gallery and they can get various information associated with weave and other crafts of textile.
